Samer Alhato, a well-known anti-Semite, recently announced that he will be presenting at the National Students for Justice in Palestine (NSJP) 2018 conference. The NSJP conference will host its eighth annual conference at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). The event, based on the theme of “resistance in the face of adversity,” will take place from November 16–18.
This announcement is drawing concerns from some members of the school’s pro-Israel community. This week, the concerned community expanded beyond the UCLA community when United States Congressman Brad Sherman (D-CA) wrote a letter to the Chancellor of UCLA, Gene Block. The letter urged Block to cancel the NSJP conference because of claims that it is exclusionary and anti-Semitic. In response, Block said in a letter addressed to Sherman on Oct. 15 that UCLA will continue to support free speech and demonstration on campus while ensuring no racial or ethnic bias or harm occurs.
Among the many of the hateful and anti-Semitic speakers scheduled to speak at the NSJP conference is Samer Alhato. Samer has a long history of anti-Semitism. In 2015, Alhato was an activist with Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) at Saint Xavier University (SXU). Since then he has continued to spread hate while masking it as “Palestinian activism.” On October 29, 2017, Alhato led a workshop at the 2017 National SJP (NSJP) conference. Samer exhibits the most offensive display of anti-Semitism. As seen in his tweets, Samer shows his hatred and complete disrespect for Jews. He said, “You’re all dirty Jews,” “Jews are so ugly,” and “I hate seeing a bunch of Jews.” His bigotry does not stop there.
Samer Alhato thinks it is funny to make Holocaust jokes. Stemming from one of the most devastating periods of human history, Samer finds humor in the genocide of Jews. Samer said, “they say there’s safety in number…tell that to the 6 million Jews,” and, “I learned in Science class that Jews can’t live on Jupiter because it’s a gas planet.” Samer thinks that killing Jews in gas chambers is funny. Samer’s jokes are rooted in hate and are anti-Semitic. These tweets show Samer’s insensitivity.
Among many of Samer Alhato’s horrendous tweets, he also wrote, “yes my people murder Jews.” Samer who identifies as Palestinian and claims he is an advocate for Palestinian rights proudly writes that Palestinians kill Jews. This form of incitement and calls to violence is what Samer is likely to be teaching at the 2018 NSJP conference.
It doesn’t stop there. If you’re not convinced that Samer Alhato is anti-Semitic, this tweet shows where Samer truly stands. Samer believes that NSJP and Palestinian activism should be run only by conservative Palestinians. He thinks that liberals should be excluded from the dialogue and blames them for the failure and collapse of many pro-Palestine spaces. How can an activist that wants to exclude liberals be able to create an inclusive environment for students at the NSJP conference?
Samer Alhato should not be welcome on UCLA’s campus. The NSJP conference is exclusionary and anti-Semitic.
